History of Amtrak Thruway Bus
Amtrak's Thruway network acts as an extension of its train services, reaching destinations beyond the immediate reach of its tracks. This network wasn't always called "Thruway." The initial iteration, launched in 1973, connected passengers from Amtrak's "Inter-American" train in Laredo, Texas, to the "Aztec Eagle" train operated by N de M in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico.
The following year, Amtrak partnered with Greyhound to offer combined rail and bus tickets for connecting services. These collaborations were the early forerunners of the current Thruway Motorcoach system.
The first dedicated bus service under the "Amtrak Thruway" name launched in California in 1993. In 2014, Amtrak significantly expanded its Thruway Motorcoach services across the entirety of the United States.
